We decided to interview people who regularly perform in front of a crowd or audience. We thought it was important to interview these people because if someone is an avid athlete or a lover of the arts, having a crowd watching is a major influence on how they perform, whether it is a good thing or a bad thing. When you’re a football player, it makes a difference to hear people in the crowd cheering for you when you score. When you are a dancer, you want to know that an audience has seen the routine that you have practiced for weeks. Dancers, actors, and athletes all experience physical and emotional contact with their collaborators and their audiences—but during COVID-19 they had to forge new ways of making those connections.
