We wanted to know how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected college students and their experience attending school. With little to no in-person classes, cancelled sporting events, and a mandate against social gatherings, the college experience was profoundly changed for all students. Since college is usually a time where people flourish socially and grow academically, we interviewed college-aged students about their experience with education during the pandemic. We found that college students feel disconnected, anxious about the future, and overall lonely because of the pandemic. Many first-year students have yet to meet new people, and many fourth-year students are unsure about joining the workforce during a worldwide crisis. Not only do students tend to feel disconnected with their peers, but they expressed the feeling of disconnection from their university. Since many classes are online and all social events were made to be virtual, there is a lack of school pride and a clear decrease in overall mental well-being among the students that we interviewed. Amidst all of the chaos and uncertainty, we share with you some personal messages from college students of adjustment and hope during these challenging times.
